Cardinal Power is one of the most efficient natural gas cogeneration facilities in Ontario, with a five-year average availability of 96.7%.
Cardinal Power operates under a Non-Utility Generator Agreement (NUG) with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). It operates as a dispatchable facility, only supplying energy to the Ontario grid when needed.
Cardinal Power uses a highly reliable Siemens Westinghouse 501 D5 gas turbine to generate 105 MW of electricity. The generated electricity is sold to the Ontario Electricity Financial Corporation under a power purchase agreement. Initially on start-up of plant, the steam and compressed air generated by Cardinal was sold at contracted rates to an Ingredion Canada Incorporated facility located adjacent to the plant. Cardinal has been the 501D5 turbine’s world fleet leader in availability every year since the start of commercial operation. This accomplishment reflects the reliable design of the turbine as well as the positive effect of preventive maintenance.
CGTA provides Cardinal Power with detailed engineering support for system upgrades and energy optimization.
